Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Mariae (B.V.) Nativitas

Natività di Maria

The birth of the Virgin Mary is commemorated on September 8 in the Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Church. The feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (In Nativitate B.M.V.) is also called the Nativity of Our Lady. It probably evolved from the festival of the consecration of St. Anna’s Church near the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. The church was built on the location thought to be the home of Anne and Joachim, Mary’s parents, and is considered to be the birthplace of Mary. Celebrations of the feast spread in the eleventh century, although no exact date is known.
