Germany : Dresden, Munich : Working group Germany
The RISM working group in the Federal Republic of Germany is a legally autonomous part of the international joint venture RISM, which is compiling an international inventory of musical sources. The task of the RISM Germany working group is to identify and catalogue music prints, manuscripts, writings, and librettos found in German collections, dating from about 1600 to the mid-19th century.
Since 1979, musical iconography in the field of fine arts has concurrently been collected through a co-operation with the Répertoire International d'Iconographie Musicale (RIdIM). More information about the activity of the German RIdIM Office can be found here.
The project is financed by the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz and is overseen by two offices. The Munich office is responsible for the area of the "old Federal states" (former West Germany). For the "new Federal states" (former East Germany), the office in Dresden is in charge. Materials from the Berlin libraries are cataloged by both offices, with the Munich office handling the manuscripts and the Dresden office managing the printed editions. Both working groups send the catalogued titles to the RISM-Zentralredaktion in Frankfurt for further processing.
Reports of the RISM Germany working group’s activities are published annually in the Jahrbuch der Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz. The annual report for 2009 can be found here (in German).
