RISM-series A/II as (Linked) Open Data?

Dear RISM-community, during the RISM-conference in Mainz two weeks ago, a proposal has been made to publish the data records of the RISM-series A/II as (linked) open data. In the attached files I have described the background of this proposal (in English and in German). The RISM board and the RISM central office support this proposal. What do the RISM working groups think about this idea? The meeting of the RISM advisory council at the IAML-conference in Montreal on July 27 could be used for discussing this topic and hopefully making a decision. In case that we go ahead in publishing RISM A/II as LOD, we must decide on the appropriate licences. I am in favour of the licence CC-BY and refer to the paper of Klaus Graf and Sanford Thatcher (see third enclosed file). The arguments of Sanford Thatcher against CC-BY are in my opinion not applicable to the RISM-data because they refer to monographs and journal papers. Best regards, Jürgen Diet    |

Dear Jürgenn Diet, I would not just speak about RISM A/II data but all data of the RISM OPAC. In it there are some data of printed sources and even some librettos. B/I data (Howard M. Brown)will be included soon. Concerning the licence I hope for further contributions Best regards Klaus Keil |

Dear Jürgen I think making RISM data available as linked data or open data is an excellent idea. We in RISM(UK&IRL) would be keen to support this - though we would have to discuss it with our Trustees. What do other national groups think? I would be interested to read other responses to this suggestion on this forum. And those of us attending the IAML conference in Montreal next month can discuss it at one of our meetings. I took a look at the six Creative Commons licenses as explained here <http://creativecommons.org/licenses/?lang=en> (as mentioned in the "RISM Data as LOD" document). I also agree that CC BY seems to be the most appropriate. I see some drawbacks to the other licenses, but I would be interested in hearing other perspectives: -CC BY-ND: A license with No Derivatives would prevent the RISM data from being manipulated and altered, which would make it difficult for some projects to use the data. -CC BY-NC: A Non-Commercial Use license would prevent RISM data from being used in catalogs published by academic presses (for example). -ShareAlike: People might be reluctant to license under identical terms, especially if they want to enter contracts with publishers or other third parties in the future. CC BY might be the most attractive to RISM users and offer the most flexibility. |

Dear collegues, we are convinced by the Linked Open Data idea. But there are some risk, especially that other institutions can work with these data in an unfortunate way for RISM. For ex. other national working groups/international projects don't include their data in the RISM OPAC. With LOD they are able to create their own complete catalogue, maybe in a better outfit, including the updates. Which LOD license can guarantee that the data won’t get disrespected in the sense of „taking the data but give nothing“? The LOD idea is a good model, looking into libraries and bibliographic data, but the RISM-titles of the working groups are more than this. Our data are no railway-schedule, with which we can work and combine with a bus schedule, and so creating new schedules. Our data are creative scientific work, on which everyone can work as Linked Open Data, but let us sign our data, that everyone can see, that this work has been “Made by RISM”, means in my opinion I would prefer license CC BY-SA (see http://creativecommons.org/licenses/). |

It seems to me that most people in this blog discussion are in favor of publishing the RISM-data as (linked) open data, but there are different opinions concerning the appropriate licence. This is a difficult questions as it is hard to understand which implications each licence has. In June 2011, a summit on "International Linked Open Data in Libraries, Archives, and Museums" took place in San Francisco. One outcome of this summit was a draft document that evaluated the different licencing options for the LAM-community (LAM stands for libraries, archives, and museums). Here is a quote from this draft document that describes the attribution share-alike in CC-BY-SA: "This option meets the definition of openness but potentially limits reuse of data since if more than one dataset is reused and if each dataset has an associated Share-Alike license. Under an Share-Alike license, the only way to legally combine two datasets is if they share exactly the same SA license, since most SA licenses require that reused data be redistributed under exactly same license. If the source datasets had different Share-Alike licenses originally (e.g. CC-BY-SA and ODC-ODbl) then there is no way for the user to comply with the requirements of both source data licenses so this option only allows users to link or integrate data distributed under one particular SA license (or one SA license and any of the other license or waiver options above). In the LAM domain, where significant value is created by combining datasets, the Share-Alike license requirement severely reduces the utility of a dataset." I think having the RISM data as linked open data would be an excellent way to go. Together with this, I would recommend to look at harvesting solutions for bringing together RISM dataset dynamically, for example from working groups who have existing databases. This would avoid to have to organize data exchange procedures that are highly time/work consuming and that create maintenance problems in the long run. It is of course a slightly difference question but it would certainly be wise to consider it at the same time. Best wishes, Laurent |

Dear Laurent Yes, there was further discussion at IAML in Montreal last month on LOD, about which I will report to the Forum very soon, but here I was very interested in your suggestion about harvesting data. We in the UK would be very interested in having our data harvested for the central RISM database. To have this done automatically rather than manually would be beneficial to everyone. As you know, we have various cataloguing projects in the UK&Irl at the moment and we would be very happy for this data to me made available as quickly as possible to the wider community. Such a development would presumably be of benefit to other RISM groups with separate databases? However I don't know anything about the technicalities. Is this feasible? How do we go about investigating? Best wishes Richard |

Further to the discussion about RISM and linked open data: As stated in a previous post the RISM board discussed this issue at its meeting in Mainz in June 2012 and was in favour of making RISM data available as linked open data. At the IAML conference in Montreal on 27 July, members of the Commission Mixte and the Advisory Council also discussed this proposal, and were similarly in favour, with a preference for making the data available under the CC-BY licence. Not all national RISM groups were represented at this meeting, so we would very much like to receive opinions from other members now on this topic, with a view to closing discussion on this by 30 October. We would very much hope that national groups were happy for the data that they have submitted to RISM to be made available in this way. The data in question would be all data publicly accessible via the RISM-OPAC (currently the RISM-series A/II, but in future also data from other series such as B and A/I). Richard Chesser |
Quick guide for the search
- Wildcard-Search
With the help of a so-called wildcard you can look for several search words, which have the same word beginning. If you search e.g. for "Typo*", the search will find everything that begins with "Typo" : Typo3, Typoscript, Typocode, Typo3user... etc.
- Negative search
If you do not want to find certain expressions in your search result, you can cause this with placing a hyphen in front. Terms containing this phrase are excluded from the search result.
- Search for user
It is possible to limit the search result on answers of certain users. In addition to the retrieval query attach still another "user:username" and find the results, which were written by this certain user. If the username could not be found this will be ignored.
